When in 1886 the German engineer Carl Benz invented the automobile there was only one. Today we think in different categories. There are hatchbacks, convertibles, MPV's, SUV's. We have sports-cars and countless more fancy words to describe a type of car.
As cars became faster, with even more horsepower than ever before, the term supercars came into fashion to describe high performance sports-cars, like a Lamborghini or Ferrari. But with the fast developments in the automobile sector soon the term supercar was not good enough anymore. To describe a new category of ultra-high-performance supercars, the term hyper-car was invented.
The trend became serious in 2013 with McLaren's P1 featuring a twin-turbo V8 monster and one of the meanest-looking rear ends in car manufacturing industry. Even Batman would trade his tank against this piece of automotive art.

Since then the top one percent of all supercars get acknowledged as hyper-cars.
Attributes are usually: rarity, advanced technology, speed and in general anything that goes above and beyond current thinking of how to make a supercar better. Current models include not only McLaren's P1.
Also Ferrari's "La Ferrari" is part of the family. The F12’s 6.3-litre V12 engine is working in tandem with a 161bhp electric motor to reach a top speed of 217mph (350 km/h).

Also the mid-engine engineering marvel from Stuttgart in Germany - the Porsche 918 Spyder, powered by a 4.6 L V8 engine with 608 PS is a rare find outside the usual car hotspots.

Supercars are a pretty common in nice neighbourhoods around the globe. In Zurich, Switzerland alone you can't count the number of supercars taking over the roads of the city every weekend.
Only Hyper-cars are rarely seen anywhere outside of Dubai, London or the French Riviera. Unimaginable that someone would ever handover the keys to the extremely limited editions of a hyper-car. So if you ever wanted to test-drive one of those rare hyper-cars the chances are pretty low unless your billionaire friend is really, really close to you.
